The Coyne family’s handsome Connemara gastropub has three centuries of history in its portfolio, traversing the ages all the way back to 1811, when Michael Coyne’s great-grandparents established a bar and grocery store, in little Kilkieran, near to Oyster Bay, south of Maam Cross.
Today, the Coyne family have made that legacy into something vibrant, cultured and utterly of its age, stewarding a sparkling modern Irish gastropub that also boasts an enticing West Coast Artisan Pantry, offering all the good things made by the producers and craftspeople of the region.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Coyne’s incarnates the spirit of this most beautiful part of the Connemara Gaeltacht, the spirit of hospitality, of music, of sociable food and drink. Michael Coyne is an expert in the local Connemara culture, and lectures in Irish culture and heritage studies. Annemarie Coyne’s cooking strikes just the right note of logical and unpretentious goodness: this is the place to enjoy poached lamb wrapped in seaweed, fresh Connemara mussels, and peerless fresh fish, and also rarities like wild Renvyle salmon.
And when you look closely, you see the care taken in the selection of wines, the local Irish craft beers, the locally roasted coffee beans. Coyne’s has gathered the flavours and the dynamism of the new Connemara food generation, and the gastropub is the perfect showcase for this smart new creativity. With a new plinth outside, and gazebos for those rare occasions when the sun doesn’t shine in Connemara, Coyne’s is a driven and dedicated destination.
