Not all hotels are created equal. If you stay in an hotel which is part of a chain or an international group, then the staff will do things By The Book. They will have a manual that tells them how to do… everything, in fact.
But if you stay in an Irish family-owned and family-run hotel, like Sheedy’s of Lisdoonvarna, then it’s more than likely that nothing whatsoever is written down, and the hospitality you will enjoy will be spontaneous, unforced, natural, empathetic. It will, in short, be real, and the team who look after you will be doing it because they love their work, and love to share their hotel with guests. They have learnt by example, by good example
You see this in simple ways. At the foot of the list of main course dishes offered on the menu in Sheedy’s, a little note advises guests: “All gratuities appreciated and split between all the team”.
There you have the soul and spirit of Sheedy’s, and of classic Irish family-run hotels: spilt between all the team. John and Martina Sheedy's country hotel is generous, and gracious, a place where everything is shared. Generosity and graciousness is what has always distinguished Sheedy’s, making it one of the finest places to stay and eat in Ireland.
The hotel is comfortable – their re-styled verandah has been a brilliant success – and John’s cooking is that rare bird: a style of food that is utterly ageless: roasted scallops with pea purée; hake with saffron mash and mussel sauce; Burren lamb with New Quay spinach.
Sheedy’s breakfast is, for our money, one of the finest meals served in Ireland, with every dish cooked to order and – pay attention people! – the scones are out-of-this-world good, and the scrambled eggs are pure culinary gold.
Sheedy’s is a shining star of Irish hospitality.
